Session Title: Connecting Communities to Nature - The Violet Crown Trail

For years the real estate community and environmentalists in burgeoning cities such as Austin have been at odds. Hill Country Conservancy (HCC) was formed by leaders on both sides of the conversation to help bridge opposing opinions and seek common ground. But how do we cultivate a spirit of environmentalism in a city where over 100 people move in every day who may not have a connection to our unique landscape nor an understanding of the immediate need to protect it? The answer: get them on the land; engage them in nature; nurture a love for the outdoors; provide vital access to nature now before it disappears forever.

George Cofer, Executive Director of HCC, explores how the 30-mile Violet Crown Trail (VCT) offers just that. Connecting the heart of downtown Austin to Austin's beloved green spaces and into the rolling countryside, this trail will offer unprecedented access to nature with multiple entry points, directional signage, educational kiosks, and programming. Trail users of all types, from cyclists to runners, families to fitness groups and friends, will find value in the recreational aspects, health benefits, transportation alternatives, and the simple ability to disappear into a natural environment while just minutes away from the bustle of the city.

By assessing not only experience but also competencies, skills, and indicators of grit and potential, rather than what’s on a resume alone, companies can more accurately identify candidates that fit their needs with the potential to succeed, while broadening the potential talent pool.

Join us for a discussion on the history and relevance of skills-based hiring and how General Assembly is working to tackle this ever-pressing issue. When entrepreneurs pitch to kids, honest and unfiltered questions surface. The answers not only educate the kids but also challenge the pitchers to explain their company using simple, straightforward, and understandable language. By engaging with the entrepreneurs, kids become inspired to problem solve, create, and make ideas reality - just as the entrepreneurs do. Session Title: Outcomes of Immersive Learning: Coding Bootcamps

Once upon a time, if you wanted to become a software developer, you’d get a degree in computer science or learn on the job and read how-to books in your spare time. Both approaches would take several years or more, and neither would promise you a job. In the age of mobility, those models no longer work. Businesses need programmers now. They don’t have the resources to groom new programmers, and non-techies looking for a career change don’t have time to earn a four-year degree. Enter the world of coding boot camps.

Coding boot camps like MakerSquare and Hack Reactor are designed to immerse students in how to be a programmer and, moreover, a life learner. Students gather in an immersive space for 3 months and spend over 600 core hours to learn how to code under the tutelage of senior developers with decades of success and experience in the field, become autonomous developers, and work on soft skills like communication, collaboration, group dynamics, and leadership. This aspect of the boot camps is key to helping prepare students for a career in programming.

Come join MakerSquare, Austin’s very first coding bootcamp, at this insightful NewCo session to learn about the outcomes of immersive learning and see real project demos that students have created in as little as 4 weeks. There will be a Q+A session to follow up to ask questions to alumni of MakerSquare and hear from employers who hire MakerSquare graduates about their experience and success.

The future of immersive learning and education is bright - - the imagination is the limit. Software Engineering is just the start. Anyone can create an impactful program to teach people the hard skills to left transform their careers. We’ll reveal our secret ingredients that's made us so successful by graduating over 700 students with 96% placement rate within 6 months post graduation and alumni who have gone on to work at companies like Amazon, Facebook, Google, IBM, Uber, Salesforce, and hundreds of smaller startups that are helping innovate and transform technology.

Session Title: How Web Data Makes The Case for STRs in Austin

Earlier this year, Austin passed a ban on a specific type of short-term rentals (STRs). It's unclear if the economic impact of this decision was effectively measured. Thanks to data available on the web, we can actually measure the economic impact of STRs in Austin. In particular, we can look at whether limiting STR supply would impact one of the city's largest revenue drivers: SXSW. Without STRs, would there actually be enough space for SXSW visitors?

Processing an unbounded sequence of data in real-time presents many difficulties not present in traditional batch-oriented processing methods.  Problems that are trivial in the batch world can be quite a bit tougher when presented as a streaming problem.  For example, streaming programs are never meant to terminate.  Calculations and stateful processing must be handled carefully to ensure consistency and correctness.
In this talk I'll present you with one such problem - computing ad clickthrough rates - and use it to illustrate pitfalls that can arise in streaming data situations.  I'll discuss a few streaming systems, with particular emphasis on Apache Storm, Apache Spark Streaming, and Apache Kafka.

Retinoblastoma (Rb) is one of the most common childhood cancers. The cardinal symptom of Rb is called leukocoria, or "white eye". Leukocoria is often ignored by parents and overlooked by doctors. This leads to late diagnosis of Rb in many children, which greatly decreases survivors' quality of life. We trained deep neural networks to detect this symptom and alert parents when the symptom is found. Session Title: Why your Open Data is ready to be Linked Data

There are more Open Data sets on the internet today than there were websites when Google started, and thanks to Open Government policies and the Reproducible Research movement that growth is accelerating. Open Data’s rise will play a determining factor in how we solve humanity's biggest problems—yet discovering, exploring, and collaborating on these data sets remains a struggle.

Far too many Open Data sets are distributed on siloed data portals with no common taxonomies or information architectures, shared as downloadable documents or databases that cannot be queried or correlated to other data sources, formatted in ways that require specialized handling, devoid of vital semantics.

What if we could fix all of these problems with a single technology? In fact, we can—and the solution has been hidden in plain sight for years.

Linked Data is the ability to express data as atomic facts using globally defined properties and relationships that can carry structured notions of meaning. It is a well developed area of computer science with significant adoption in certain industries.

Why, then, aren't more Open Data sets available as Linked Data?

The usual suspects—lack of awareness, technical skill gaps—certainly play a role, but the primary counterweight is something of a chicken and egg problem. Open, Linked Data sets are far more valuable at scale, once a network effect has been achieved. The value of each data set increases in proportion to the number of data sets that are networked. Historically, Open Data sets have been few and far between, but those days are over. Now we have enough Open Data to create immediate value by linking it together using today’s technologies. So how should you get started?

In this talk, you will learn how to apply Linked Data to any structured data set, how to contribute to and benefit from the network effect at the crossroads of Open Data and Linked Data, and where these powerful technologies are likely to take us next.

Amy's Ice Creams

Session Title: MBAmy's and Amy's EDU: Transparency, Education and Building Young Entrepreneurs or "What Are They Crushing Into The Ice Cream Over There?!"

Depending on what time of day it is and which location of Amy's Ice Creams you walk into, the energy could be anywhere from 5-year old's birthday bash to after hours dance party. The company's mission statement is to 'Make People's Day' and they've been working hard to accomplish that goal in myriad ways for 32 years. Known for super-premium award-winning ice cream, impeccable customer service and enduring, steadfast company culture, this Austin institution received the Austintatious Award, chosen by the readers of The Austin Business Journal for "the company that best represents the local Austin business community,” for two consecutive years since it's creation in 2014. You may have heard the infamous instances of ice-cream being hurled across the street to an adrenaline-pumped customer holding their empty bowl on the other side or a whole store full of adults being taught the Hokey-Pokey or led in a sing-along while they wait to be served. This highly-engaging performance element of customer experience has been described by many as barely-controlled chaos being created right before your eyes, however, the more compelling and lesser-known story is one of structure, systems, consistency, transparency, education and personal development. You'll hear how an ice cream company with 275 employees across 15 locations practices open-book finance, with complete financial transparency across all levels of the company. The company has offered a curriculum of internal classes over the past 10 years with MBAmy's, building happy, engaged employees while teaching entrepreneurship, business education, financial literacy and product knowledge. Now comes the next chapter of our education mission with Amy's EDU, a consultancy business offering expertise in customer service, leadership and open-book management for small to medium-sized companies of all kinds.

Session Title: Why Do We Need ChickTech?"

For many women, technology careers don't feel like a viable option. This is not just due to sexism and unconscious biases, but a lack of women applying and staying in technology roles. A study of UT students in 2009 found that 26.6% of males surveyed chose a degree in Engineering or Computer Science, whereas just 6.2% females surveyed chose the same degree path.

Programs like ChickTech educate girls on what they can do with a career in tech and sets them up with mentors to help them succeed.

After the inaugural ChickTech: High School in 2013, research showed that ChickTech changed high school participants’ attitudes and feelings around technology and their place in creating it:

71% of our participants had never attended a technology workshop before ChickTech.
118% overall increase in confidence in participants technology skills.
Those who are very interested in a technology career increased from 14% to 46%.
60% reported an increase in interest in a technology career
In 2015 ChickTech: High School showed tremendous results:

55% of our participants had no experience creating tech projects before choosing ChickTech
participants who felt “confident” or “very confident” in their technology skills increased from 27% to 74%
participants who felt “informed” or “well informed” about technology increased from 46% to 91%
we increased the number of high school participants who were “interested” or “very interested” in a tech career from 47% to 89% …in only one weekend.

Session Title: Are you truly an Innovator …or just a Disrupter?

You have succeeded as a business leader by bringing innovative new products and services to market – ones that change the world by solving social and commercial problems while allowing other businesses and individuals to reach their potential.

But when it comes to brand development, positioning as a true innovator is not as simple as having a good product or service and disrupting the marketplace status quo.

Developing a compelling value proposition that your employees and advocates can clearly articulate requires serious work. Companies too often focus narrowly on the “what” and not the “why” and hence fail to justify their proposition as truly innovative.

This session with Joy Schoffler, an award-winning fintech specialist and PR strategist, will show the “how” for developing a brand and messaging that is considered genuinely innovative. Joy and her team will offer tips on how to cut through the noise and deal with a press that can be cynical about any solution billing itself as the next best thing.

Hunting the Mythical Balanced Entrepreneur

Running a business can have tremendous highs and lows, especially if you go it alone. Tapping into a peer group or mentorship in the right way can be the difference between a collaborative, exciting journey and a lonely, stressful one. In this panel discussion we’ll join owners of successful Austin businesses to discuss how they've engaged with peers and mentors to help them in their entrepreneurial journey. Hear about what they've learned and what they would do differently next time.
