Session Title: Connecting Communities to Nature - The Violet Crown Trail

For years the real estate community and environmentalists in burgeoning cities such as Austin have been at odds. Hill Country Conservancy (HCC) was formed by leaders on both sides of the conversation to help bridge opposing opinions and seek common ground. But how do we cultivate a spirit of environmentalism in a city where over 100 people move in every day who may not have a connection to our unique landscape nor an understanding of the immediate need to protect it? The answer: get them on the land; engage them in nature; nurture a love for the outdoors; provide vital access to nature now before it disappears forever.

George Cofer, Executive Director of HCC, explores how the 30-mile Violet Crown Trail (VCT) offers just that. Connecting the heart of downtown Austin to Austin's beloved green spaces and into the rolling countryside, this trail will offer unprecedented access to nature with multiple entry points, directional signage, educational kiosks, and programming. Trail users of all types, from cyclists to runners, families to fitness groups and friends, will find value in the recreational aspects, health benefits, transportation alternatives, and the simple ability to disappear into a natural environment while just minutes away from the bustle of the city.
